Mountain Recreation is seeking Adult Sports Officials (Softball Umpires) for adult softball leagues, games, and tournaments. Referees help maintain fair play, enforce game rules, and ensure a positive experience for all participants.

POSITION DETAILS

Job Title: Adult Sports Official – Adult Softball Umpire

Location: Eagle Fairgrounds Sports Complex (Eagle, CO)

Employment Type: Seasonal, Part-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Overtime Eligible)

Schedule: Work schedule is varied and may require evenings, weekends, and holidays. Hours vary depending upon specific program needs. Season spans from April through October. 

Supervision Required: Works under the supervision of the Sports & Athletics Coordinators and Sports & Athletics Supervisor 

Supervision Exercised: None


Work Environment and Physical Demands: Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors, depending on the sport and event, and may include exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or wind. Work schedules are flexible and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, with hours varying based on the needs of specific sports programs.


The role requires sustained mental focus, visual attention, and situational awareness. Physical activities may include walking, jogging, running, bending, kneeling, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and delivering equipment and supplies.


Job-related stress may arise from managing crowds, interacting with participants, handling difficult situations or individuals, and periods of sustained activity or high demand.

Salary: $35-$40/game; depending on certification

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

General Statement of Duties: Officiates adult softball games, leagues, and tournaments by enforcing game rules, maintaining fair play, and ensuring a safe and positive experience for all participants. This position is responsible for making impartial decisions, managing conflicts professionally, and supporting the overall integrity of the sporting event.


Essential Functions:

  • Officiates games, leagues, and tournaments, maintaining standards of play and ensuring events are conducted safely and fairly. 
  • Interprets and enforces district and Eagle County rules, regulations, and policies. 
  • Resolves participant disputes, rule infractions, and complaints, assessing penalties as appropriate in accordance with district regulations. 
  • Inspects sporting equipment and participants to ensure compliance with safety and event regulations. 
  • Completes administrative tasks necessary for the successful staging of events, including accident reports, statistical records, and other documentation as required. 
  • Attends all required district trainings, official clinics, and continuing education relevant to the position. 
  • Identifies and responds promptly to facility or field safety hazards; reports unresolved hazards to supervisors. 

Other Duties: 

  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the sports program.

Requirements

  

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable knowledge of: Rules, regulations, and playing standards of the specific sport, as well as safety guidelines necessary to perform the assignment effectively. This knowledge ensures accurate officiating, consistent application of rules, and a safe environment for all participants.


Skills and abilities: Apply and enforce the rules of the sport, exercise strong initiative, and make independent decisions in dynamic situations. They should demonstrate leadership, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills, communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms, and interact professionally with a diverse range of participants and patrons. Establishing and maintaining positive, respectful, and cooperative relationships with all contacts is essential to creating a fair, safe, and enjoyable sporting environment.


Requirements:

Education and experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; AND 
  • One year of work-related experience with the rules, regulations, and safety guidelines of the specific sport; OR
  • Any satisfactory combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Certifications:

  • May require possession of or ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Certification or licensing as a softball umpire is preferred, demonstrating knowledge of official rules, mechanics, and safe officiating practices.
