As a key member of the Summer Camp staff team, the counselor is responsible for creating a safe, fun and positive atmosphere that promotes member engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
- Stands and greets parents and campers by name.
- Leads group songs, games and crafts, and engages campers in learning activities.
- Implement educational activities to summer camp to help stop summer learning loss and weekly themed activities.
- Maintains positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies all safety rules.
- Communicates with parents and caregivers in a professional manner that represents the Y regarding their child’s activities/day.
- Possess a willingness to work with youth and have FUN.
- Able to be a role model for campers and teens in our programs.
- A leader that has initiative, enthusiasm, and strong interpersonal skills.
- Attends all staff meetings and training as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Lifting up to 50lbs
- Climbing, sitting, standing, pushing, walking, kneeling, and stooping
- Tolerate heat and humidity for extended periods of time
- Must be able to be outdoors for major portions of the day.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Noise level- High
- Multi-tasking environment
- Exposure to heat and sun for extended periods
- Standing for extended period
SHIFT: Monday-Friday, no weekends, 6:30am to 6:30pm availability, must be available to work a flexible Shift.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 17
- Team player with personal commitment to YMCA Mission, Philosophy & Character Development Values.
- People centered, service oriented.
- Ability to lead, inspire, and motivate camp staff teams, while supporting the Camp & Program Directors’ vision.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Previous camp or group leadership experience preferred.
- Provide excellent supervision and leadership for staff and campers.
- Ability to follow and implement all safety procedures and protocols.
